Our RE focus this half term is Exploring the Mass. We will be studying in detail that Jesus is the bread of life and think about what that means to us. Understand that Jesus made a New Covenant with us and think about our part in this. The children will understand the Penitential Act, Liturgy of the Word, what happens at the offertory, the Consecration and reflect on what this means for us. The children will know that is it Jesus we receive in Holy Communion, understanding that the Eucharist is the source and summit of life and know that Jesus is present in the Blessed Sacrament, being aware of how his presence can help us.
In Science, the children will explore the function and structure of the heart and the circulatory system being able to explain the effect of exercise on heart rate and understand the function of the blood.
PE sessions will take place on Wednesday and Fridays. We will be focusing on Hockey and Gymnastic this half term. Remember the children come dressed in their PE kit on those days.
In English we are studying the book ‘The Selfish Giant’ by Oscar Wilde. The children will look for evidence that the text was written a long time away and be introduced to lots of new vocabulary. They will write a monologue in the role of the Giant, several poems using personification and figurative language and finally a story. Our Reading book also links to Oscar Wilde, reading his stories The Happy Prince and The Devoted Friend. We will be studying the messages behind the book and look at how the author portrays the story through his descriptions.
Homework
Homework for Maths, Comprehension and SPAG will be given out on a Thursday and expected to be completed and in school for the following Thursday, ready to marked that day.
The children will be learning new spelling rules weekly. Although there will be no formal spelling test, the children will be given opportunities in school to practise their spellings and to apply new spelling rules to their writing.
